Charles Leclerc Takes ‘Difficult Situation’ Stance Over Key Mercedes Battleground
Ferrari has enjoyed a promising start to the 2026 F1 season — but has yet to defeat dominant Mercedes. The Monegasque driver explains why the fight is far from over.
Ferrari entered the 2026 season with genuine title aspirations under the new regulations, delivering strong performances in Australia and the Chinese sprint. Yet Mercedes has quickly established itself as the benchmark, showcasing superior race pace that left the Scuderia trailing in race trim.
Mercedes Pace Confirmed in China
After the Chinese Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc admitted the true picture finally became clear. While Ferrari had kept Mercedes within striking distance in Australia and the sprint, the long-run pace gap — estimated at three- to five-tenths per lap — was impossible to ignore once the race unfolded.
“I didn’t understand why we were so close in Australia, why we were so close in the sprint,” Leclerc said. “I guess now it’s a little bit more in line.”

“But that doesn’t mean we cannot put them under pressure and into a difficult situation, because with the fighting of these cars, it can be quite interesting.”

Leclerc’s Fighting Spirit Remains Strong
Despite the deficit, the Ferrari driver refused to concede defeat. He believes the nature of the 2026 cars — with their emphasis on battery management and close racing — gives Ferrari the chance to create chaos and force Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli into difficult decisions during races.

Upgrades in the Pipeline
Leclerc confirmed that Ferrari already has development parts ready for the SF-26. While he stopped short of guaranteeing they will close the entire gap, the team is working flat out to turn the early-season momentum into consistent podium threats — and eventually race wins.
The intra-team battle between Leclerc and new teammate Lewis Hamilton has also added extra spice, delivering thrilling on-track duels that have kept fans engaged while Mercedes pulled away at the front.
As the season heads to Japan and beyond, all eyes remain on whether Ferrari’s upgrades can finally bridge the gap to the dominant Silver Arrows.
