McLaren Must « Defend » and « Exploit Counterattacks » at Season Start
The reigning champions acknowledge they are slightly behind Ferrari and Mercedes heading into the new era of Formula 1
McLaren enters the 2026 Formula 1 season as the defending champions, having won both the constructors’ and drivers’ titles in 2025 with Lando Norris. However, team principal Andrea Stella has warned that the Papaya team will begin the new campaign in a defensive posture, acknowledging that their MCL40 car is slightly behind their main rivals.
A New Challenge for the Defending Champions
The 2026 season represents the biggest regulation overhaul in Formula 1 history, with both power unit and chassis regulations changing simultaneously. This complete reset has turned the competitive order upside down, and according to Stella, McLaren finds itself playing catch-up rather than leading the pack.
This assessment places McLaren behind Ferrari and Mercedes in the early pecking order, though the picture could change rapidly once the season gets underway and development rates kick in.
The Defensive Strategy
Stella used a football metaphor to describe McLaren’s approach for the opening phase of the season. « To use a football metaphor, the first part of the season will see us playing a bit defensively, trying to exploit the counterattack, » he stated following pre-season testing in Bahrain.
This strategy means McLaren will focus on containing the gap to their rivals rather than pushing for immediate victories. The team will look to stay close enough to challenge when opportunities arise, capitalizing on any mistakes or developments from their competitors.
The Italian boss emphasized that the team needs to « work hard to catch up and develop the car as quickly as possible. » Once the true competitive order becomes clear, rapid development will be the key differentiator throughout the season.
Testing Performance Analysis
Across the Barcelona Shakedown and two weeks of pre-season testing in Bahrain, McLaren completed 1,108 laps, totaling an impressive 5,776.791 kilometers – roughly equivalent to the distance from McLaren’s factory in Woking to the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Testing Numbers
McLaren completed 1,108 laps during pre-season testing, covering 5,776.791 km – equivalent to driving from Woking to Abu Dhabi.
While the team was satisfied with the reliability of their package, the outright pace left room for improvement. Mercedes and Ferrari emerged as the early favorites after demonstrating strong race simulation performance, with Red Bull also in the mix.
« We are satisfied, » Stella added. « I think we worked very well, both on the track and in Woking, to gather a lot of useful information to better understand the behaviour of the MCL40 and the new power unit. »
The Works Team Advantage
Stella highlighted that the three leading competitors – Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull – are all works teams, which provides them with certain advantages in developing their packages. As customer teams, McLaren and others must rely on their engine partners for key components, which can create additional complexity in the development process.
Despite this, McLaren remains confident in their ability to close the gap through rapid development. The team has proven in recent seasons that they can mount strong comebacks through the course of a championship.
Looking Ahead to Melbourne
With just over a week to go until the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, McLaren is entering the final phase of their preparations. The team will be hoping to minimize losses in the early races while gathering crucial data to accelerate their development programme.
Norris, who finally enters a season with the number one on his car after winning the 2025 championship, will be looking to defend his title against stiff competition. Oscar Piastri, meanwhile, continues to develop as a leading contender.
The 2026 season promises to be one of the most unpredictable in recent Formula 1 history, and McLaren’s defensive approach could prove to be a wise strategy as they look to retain their championship crowns.
