United States GP winners and losers: Antonelli and Ferrari up, Russell down
Antonelli’s lead grows to 123 points, Ferrari outscore Mercedes and Red Bull catch McLaren, while Russell, Hadjar and Haas leave Austin with little or nothing.
Kimi Antonelli left Austin 123 points clear with 125 still available, Ferrari outscored Mercedes and Red Bull caught McLaren in the constructors’ standings. George Russell, Isack Hadjar and Haas had the afternoon to forget. These are the winners and losers of the United States Grand Prix, on the official numbers.
The verdicts below come from the classification, the grid, the stints and the stewards’ decisions of the race. For the full race story, read our United States GP report.
Winner: Kimi Antonelli
Pole, a one-stop race on medium and hard tyres with his only stop on lap 24, and a 13.078-second win over Leclerc. Antonelli arrived in Texas 102 points ahead of Russell and leaves 123 ahead: Austin added 21 points to his lead. The title is not decided, but with four rounds (100 points) left after Mexico City, he will be champion there unless Russell wins with Antonelli ninth or lower, or Hamilton wins with Antonelli tenth or lower.
Winners: Leclerc and Ferrari
Leclerc started fourth, stopped on laps 15 and 39 on softs, mediums and hards, finished second and set the fastest lap of the race, a 1:37.976 on lap 42. His 18 points were the second-biggest haul of the day. Hamilton, fifth on the grid, finished fourth on the same strategy. Ferrari scored 30 points to Mercedes’ 29, the only team to beat the leaders on Sunday, and Ferrari’s two drivers are now one point (Hamilton, 241) and nine points (Leclerc, 233) behind Russell in the fight for second.
Winners: Norris, and Red Bull in the constructors’ table
Norris lost a 1:34.379 to track limits in Q3 and started eighth. On Sunday he made one stop, on lap 16 from medium to hard, and finished fifth, three places up. Verstappen saved Red Bull’s day with a two-stop podium on soft-soft-medium, and the team’s 23 points to McLaren’s 16 erased a seven-point gap: Red Bull and McLaren are now tied on 355.
Loser: George Russell
Russell was the only driver of the top six in the championship to score fewer than ten points. He started sixth, received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage on lap 9, made his only stop on lap 22 and finished eighth. Race Control deleted four of his lap times for track limits, more than any other driver. His margin over Hamilton in second place fell from nine points to one, and Verstappen (six behind) and Leclerc (nine behind) are now closer.
Losers: Hadjar and Lindblad
Hadjar put his Red Bull third on the grid but stayed out until lap 25 on a soft-hard one-stop and finished sixth, 34.373s behind Antonelli. Lindblad, ninth on the grid, fell to twelfth on a two-stop soft-medium-soft race and was lapped: Racing Bulls left Austin with Lawson’s two points.
Losers: Haas, Alpine and Cadillac
Oliver Bearman was given a ten-second penalty for causing a collision and retired after 24 laps; Ocon’s three places gained only made him fourteenth, so Haas scored nothing. Franco Colapinto retired after 35 laps for Alpine. Cadillac had Valtteri Bottas out after 48 laps and Sergio Pérez nineteenth, a lap down: the team is still on zero points.
