McLaren’s 2026 MCL40A Sold for $11.48 Million Before Turning a Wheel
In a historic and unprecedented moment for motorsport auctions, the McLaren MCL40A—the team’s future Formula 1 challenger for the 2026 season—has been sold for a staggering sum at an RM Sotheby’s event.
This sale sets a new industry benchmark: never before has a Formula 1 car been sold years before its first race, or even before its official public unveiling.
Part of the “Triple Crown” Auction
The auction was themed around McLaren’s pursuit of motorsport’s legendary Triple Crown. Three future competition cars were offered to collectors:
- 2026 McLaren MCL40A: The Formula 1 flagship.
- 2026 Arrow McLaren: An IndyCar entry (driven by Pato O’Ward).
- 2027 LMDh Prototype: The car set for the World Endurance Championship.
What the Buyer Will Receive
The winning bidder will take delivery of either Lando Norris’ or Oscar Piastri’s chassis after the 2026 season. However, due to technical secrecy regarding the 2026 regulations, the physical car will not be delivered until Q1 2028.
• A 2025 show car on loan for display.
• Exclusive tour of the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking.
• VIP access to the 2026 development program and car launch.
• Hospitality at the Monaco Grand Prix and Indy 500.
A Car Shrouded in Mystery
The MCL40A will be built to the radically revised 2026 Formula 1 regulations, featuring active aerodynamics and a 50/50 hybrid power split. It will be powered by a Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrain, continuing the successful partnership between Woking and Brixworth.
A New Era for Motorsport Auctions
The sale of the MCL40A signals a shift in how Formula 1 teams leverage their brand. By auctioning future assets, McLaren has pioneered a new model of high-end collector investment that bridges the gap between ownership and immersive fan engagement.
