Why Aston Martin’s AMR26 Upgrade Faces a Spare-Parts Test Before It Races
Aston Martin’s long-awaited 2026 reset is almost here. Before its performance can be judged, however, the team must solve a more immediate problem: building enough of the new car to race it without fear.
Aston Martin has spent most of 2026 waiting for this moment. After a troubled start, limited development activity and a season spent far from the midfield, the team is preparing a substantial aerodynamic upgrade for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The package has been widely described as a B-spec-style reset, although Aston Martin has formally presented it as a major upgrade rather than a new car. The language matters less than the scale of the task. This is not another small adjustment to a flawed AMR26; it is the team’s attempt to change its competitive direction.
Yet the first challenge may arrive before the new parts even take a competitive lap. Aston Martin is working flat out to have both cars ready for Hungary—and its own trackside chief Mike Krack has admitted that spare components will be in short supply.

A major upgrade with no margin for waste
In a normal upgrade cycle, teams bring an aerodynamic component, test it, learn from it and gradually build stock. Aston Martin’s approach is more concentrated. Its production and engineering groups have been working to bring a significant package together at once, after delaying major performance development while it addressed foundational reliability issues.
That strategy is understandable. Aston Martin did not want to spend heavily producing marginal upgrades for a car that was too far from its rivals for a few tenths to transform its results. Fernando Alonso explained the logic earlier in the season: if a small gain does not change the team’s position, it still creates stress on the budget and production system.
The cost of waiting is that the first meaningful package now becomes a major manufacturing event. Two cars need full sets of new parts. Then the team needs enough backup to survive kerb damage, floor wear, contact or an accident. At a race weekend, one damaged front wing or floor can quickly expose a thin inventory.
What “B-spec” really means here
A B-spec car is not an official Formula 1 category. It is shorthand for an upgrade so comprehensive that it changes the car’s aerodynamic direction or operating characteristics. Aston Martin’s Hungary package is expected to be major, but its real value will depend on how consistently the team can run and understand it.
Why Aston Martin waited
The AMR26’s problems have not been isolated. The team’s first Honda works project arrived late to winter testing and then suffered through vibration and battery concerns. As the season unfolded, Aston Martin found weaknesses in multiple parts of its overall package: power-unit performance, energy management, chassis behaviour and gearbox operation.
Those issues changed the team’s priorities. Before chasing outright lap time, Aston Martin had to make the car reliable enough to learn from. Every interruption in running weakens correlation between factory data, simulator work and track reality. Every reliability fire consumes time that could otherwise be spent developing performance.
The result has been a difficult first half of the season. Aston Martin has effectively been racing alone at the back of the field, with little opportunity to measure whether small changes were genuinely moving it toward the midfield.

The more delicate problem is compromising the package before it has been properly evaluated. If one car runs a partial specification, or if the team loses a new floor in practice and does not have a replacement, it reduces the quality of the comparison work. That matters enormously for a car which needs to find a new baseline rather than simply refine an existing one.
Aston Martin has already experienced the pressure created by limited parts this year. At the Australian Grand Prix, a shortage of spares contributed to a cautious approach after early reliability problems. Expectations must remain grounded
The temptation is to treat an extensive upgrade as a rescue button. Aston Martin has been clear that it cannot make easy predictions. The team is far from the front and also has ground to recover to the midfield, while the competitive order can shift dramatically from one circuit to another under the 2026 regulations.
Hungary is a useful but demanding first test. The circuit’s succession of slower and medium-speed corners will place a premium on chassis balance and aerodynamic load—areas Aston Martin has struggled to exploit. A step forward there would matter, but it would not be the final verdict on the package.
The team’s wider recovery also has another stage. A new Honda power-unit specification is planned for Zandvoort after the summer break, meaning Aston Martin’s competitiveness will be shaped by both the Hungary aerodynamic package and later progress in its power-unit operation.
What to watch in Hungary
Watch first for whether both cars run the new specification cleanly through practice. Then watch the gap to the Q2 threshold—not just the final result. For Aston Martin, repeatable data and a stable baseline would be a meaningful first victory.
The verdict
Aston Martin’s spare-parts concern is not evidence that the package is failing. It is evidence of how ambitious the operation has become. A major upgrade, introduced on a tight schedule, asks the factory to deliver performance and resilience at the same time.
The team has chosen a high-risk, high-reward route: wait, diagnose the AMR26 properly, then commit hard to a larger reset. Hungary will show whether that gamble has brought Aston Martin closer to the fight. Before then, the factory’s most important race is against the clock—and the parts list.
