Reigning World Champion Lando Norris charged to pole position for the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring with a spectacular final flying lap of 1:31.824 — his third pole of the season and the 19th of his career. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli was denied by just 0.011s. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen slotted into third at +0.140s after losing time in the final sector. After the red-flag fears of FP2 and FP3, Qualifying ran cleanly from lights to chequered flag.

“Oh, what a lap, gorgeous,” Norris said on the radio — and later called it one of the best laps of his career. The McLaren had been only fifth in Q1 and seventh in Q2 before finding roughly a second from Q2 into Q3. Race day at the Madring begins at 15:00 local on Sunday.

Clean hour after the crash lottery

Two red flags in FP3 — Hamilton into the Turn 22 TecPro, Bearman into the concrete at Turns 10/11 — and Lindblad’s FP2 shunt had some teams running private sweepstakes on how many stoppages Qualifying would bring. Instead the session ran without red flags. Bearman never left the garage: Haas could not repair the damage from the morning crash in time. Lance Stroll also set no time, restricted by a suspected water-pressure issue on the Aston Martin.

Q1 — Russell’s kiss, Spaniards out

George Russell kissed the barrier in a mirror of Albon’s FP3 brush, asked the team to check for damage, then went again and posted the Q1 benchmark: 1:33.211. Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso were both eliminated in Q1 — Sainz P17, Alonso P18 — and Sainz was noted for impeding Bottas. Neither Bearman nor Stroll appeared on the timesheet.

Q2 — Verstappen paces, Colapinto and Lindblad through

Verstappen set the Q2 pace with a 1:32.431. Franco Colapinto held a snap around La Monumental, then snatched a Q3 berth. Arvid Lindblad — recovering from his FP2 crash — also squeezed into the top 10 alongside Oscar Piastri. Audi both missed Q3.

Q3 — Hamilton provisional, Norris steals it

On the first Q3 runs Hamilton claimed provisional pole with 1:32.079, bouncing back from FP3. On the final runs Antonelli soared back to P1 — until Norris’s last-gasp 1:31.824. Verstappen P3, Hamilton P4, Leclerc P5.

What the grid tells us

Norris starts from the first Madring pole with Antonelli alongside and Verstappen right behind. Sunday’s race at 15:00 local will ask whether eleven thousandths on Saturday becomes something larger under the Madrid lights.
