A Title-Deciding Scenario No One Wants to Answer

One particularly sensitive scenario has dominated paddock talk: Verstappen leading, Piastri third, Norris fourth – a combination that would hand the title to Verstappen unless Piastri lets Norris through. This would make Piastri the only person on track capable of deciding whether the title goes to his team-mate or to Red Bull’s champion.

Norris: “I would love it, but I won’t ask”

Norris has been clear that he will not personally ask McLaren – or Piastri – for help, even though he openly admits he “would love it” if team orders saved his title in that situation. He insists it would not be “a fair question” to put on his team-mate and says any such call must come from the pit wall.

Piastri: No team orders discussed yet

Oscar Piastri, still with an outside shot at the crown, has confirmed that McLaren has not yet discussed any concrete team-orders plans with him. Asked directly what he would do in the Verstappen‑Piastri‑Norris scenario, he replied that he has “no answer until I know what’s expected”.

For Piastri to become champion outright, he needs a win with Norris low in the points, so agreeing in advance to sacrifice his own race would directly undercut his slim title hopes.

McLaren’s stance: Free to race… for now

McLaren boss Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown have reiterated that both drivers will remain free to race as long as each is mathematically in contention. However, Stella has left the door open to in‑race intervention if the title picture hardens around a scenario where only Norris can realistically beat Verstappen.

How rivals see it

Rival drivers such as George Russell have argued it would not be “acceptable or reasonable” for McLaren to order Piastri aside, stressing that both drivers have earned the right to fight for their own championship chances.
